CORNWELL COURT
SOCIAL CLUB REPORT 2025
It has been a full year of varied activities again this year.
We started with an interesting talk by a volunteer from the RNLI, when we presented the charity with a cheque for £200. We were invited to a tour of their lifeboat station at Eastney which a small group were able to attend. We were fortunate to watch both boats respond to a ‘call out’ and return after a successful mission. A further £50 was donated after this visit.
The next talk was on the Kings Theatre. We learnt about the history of this beautiful old building and were reminded of the great stars that have appeared there in the 118+ years and evoked many memories.
There was also a talk on the South Coast Defence Scheme with a progress report from Alex, his third visit here. I’m sure you all agree the changes so far look amazing. Alex has already agreed to return again soon with details of the next phase.
The final talk was from The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance and showed some amazing videos of the wonderful work of the volunteers there. We were able to present them with a cheque for £400. The money raised at our V.E. Day B.B.Q celebration.
This B.B.Q (one of two this summer) was attended by many residents and supported by Agamemnon on a glorious sunny day. There were various traditional games, ‘guess the weight of the cake’, ‘number of sweets in a jar’ ‘bottle tombola’ to name a few. It was a very enjoyable day while also raising lots of money. Our thanks in particular to Tony for the great food and to the many others who helped in anyway.
There have been two mini bus trips out this year. A shopping day out at Port Solent, it was a bit chilly so the restaurants came in handy. The weather was the exact opposite for a return visit to Stanstead Park Garden Centre. A lovely day had by all.
Summer wouldn’t be the same without a cream tea. This was at the newly renovated interior of The Gaiety Bar on South Parade Pier. Another enjoyable afternoon.
Bacon rolls are still as popular as ever, thanks to Di and Ted and this year to Tony who has stepped in to help. There have been many ‘Fish & Chip’ and ‘Chinese’ nights followed by the usual quiz. Thanks to Mary & John for organising them.
Bingo evenings still continue weekly with Pam and Pete. Coffee mornings are held weekly and we appreciate the time people give to all these regular events. Encouragingly games night numbers have increased recently. The friendly rivalry to win ever present.
Also thanks to Ted and Di, who created a beautiful garden again this year and to Mick who provided the balcony with a mass of colour. Many residents enjoyed the wonderful summer among the flowers. We appreciate the donations from Agamemnon towards them.
Our Easter and Christmas raffles were very well supported with both prize donations and ticket purchases. There were over 100 prizes for Christmas! Thank you everyone.
December was filled with several Christmas events, starting with many volunteers decorating the lounge and Christmas trees. The raffle as always was well attended . A delicious festive lunch was held at the Ship and Castle on the Hard. The Christmas party was provided by Agamemnon and was a huge success with a delicious ‘grazing table’ and music from ‘The Pompey Pluckers’. It was really great to make use of our newly refitted kitchen. There were Christmas morning ‘rum tots’ and evening drinks in the lounge.
New Year’s Eve was celebrated with fun and games. As usual our residents have been very generous with our charity collections. In 2025 we have raised a total of £1250 for RNLI, Air Ambulance, Macmillan, The Poppy Appeal, Salvation Army and our current collection for The Band of The Royal Marine Volunteer Cadet Corps. Well done and thank you.
The activities are only successful with your support and attendance. A big thank you to everyone who volunteer in anyway at the various functions.
We are always happy to hear any ideas for different events.
The Club Accounts have been balanced and audited.
Wishing you all a happy and healthy 2026
